I have a 4 bedroom ranch built in the 90's that still had the original "antique brass finish" hardware on all the interior doors. I decided that updating the door handles would be a fairly easy DIY project that would deliver a very noticeable upgrade from the original contractor grade hardware.

Going from the original run-of-the-mill antique brass lever handle hardware to the new black handles and black hinges turned out to be a quick and easy way to gave the whole house an entirely new and more modern look. All of the doors were white and now, with the black hardware, the whole house somehow just looks newer and has a much more up-to-date atmosphere.

One wrinkle I did run into was in the size of the bore hole in edge of the doors. My original interior doors apparently had a 7/8" hole for the latch mechanism. The latch mechanism on these new handles is much beefier than the old contractor grade handles and requires a 1" hole. Apparently this has something to do with the older doors being from the 1990's. The one bathroom door that had been replaced a few years ago already had a 1" hole for the latch mechanism and didn't require any adjustment. For the others, I had to use a 1" drill bit to open up the hole. Sort of a PITA but not too bad and well within the ability of the average DIY homeowner.

All in including the drilling, it took about 20 minutes to install each handle. I spent another 10 minutes switching out the brass for new black hinges on each door (do one hinge at a time and it's a piece of cake).

My daughter stopped by and noticed the change almost immediately. She is in real estate and said the new "modern retro" style would easily pay for itself in the increased appeal and market value of the home. My son wasn't as observant, but I suppose that is pretty typical. Anyway, for a couple hundred bucks, I feel like I got a major improvement in both the look and value of my home. Can't beat that.

I wanted to upgrade our 30 year old knobs (yet all but one working fine) with ADA safer levers, as my 71 y.o. hands periodically cramp or feel “all thumbs”. I now have them all installed, and am greatly relieved that they are in fact, heavy duty quality hardware. I discovered when installing that our pre-hung bathroom doors had their strikers slightly higher than the latch, so I had to “rehole” striker plate screws to mate with latch.

I ordered 7 of these door handles for replacements for our old, cheap gold handles. I ordered a pack of 6 and 1 separate. I was pleasantly surprised at the weight and heft of these door handles! I tested all of them before installing and all worked fine. I did have to chisel out some of the wood where the latch piece fits into the door as the new piece was just a little bigger than the hole. I was able to do it myself with no problems. The handles have been in place for a week and we are very pleased with them! They look so much better than the old ones!

So easy to install. I received today after I decided to update my flimsy round knob handles throughout the house. I ordered the 6 pack and all levers were installed in hour and half. All close and lock as expected.
